Adlerian Psychology

The Adlerian concepts in psychology were developed by
Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs, psychiatrists who moved from Vienna to the
U.S.A. "Individual Psychology" was developed and taught by them. They used
the word "individual" to imply that human beings are unique, indivisible,
and holistic. Adlerian ideas are applicable to all relationships and can be
usefully applied at home, at school and in the workplace.
Dr. Adler was the first to notice how our mental and
physical health is affected by our social relationships. Dr. Driekurs
developed the idea of understanding behaviour in terms of four common goals:
attention, power, protection, and withdrawal. Their teachings emphasize how
important it is to nurture our ability to cooperate with others as equal
human beings. Adler and Driekurs advocate the principles of mutual respect
among adults, teens and children and promote harmonious living.
"Equality means that
people, despite their individual differences and abilities, have equal claim
to dignity and respect."
Rudolf Driekers
Adlerian Psychology is practiced worldwide. International
summer schools and work-shops are held annually in a variety of countries.
